Official statement on Haiti
I for one don't support the overwhelming effort to cast support for Haiti as politically correct, and in fact required. Let me explain why.
We've also been sending foreign aid to Haiti for the duration of that time, and ever since the military junta got tossed in 1994. Since 2004's elections the UN has had MINUSTAH running in Haiti to support and stabilize the country. All of which comes with a MASSIVE influx of both private and public funding to stabilize the country and it's government.
The USGS has been warning Haiti about the threat of a major earthquake for 15 years. This warning was repeated and emphasized 2 years ago, and the Hatian government has done NOTHING.
All of these efforts have been hampered by the corruption and abuse perpetrated by democratically elected leaders. These people aren't dictators, they're freely elected by the people. They're also pocketing the money from the foreign aid.
Lets be clear here, this has been a democratic country for 16 years (about as long as the former USSR). Haiti has received unprecedented aid during that time. The earthquake was predicted, we knew it was going to happen. The people voted for their leaders in free elections. No one tricked these people, they made bad choices, and now it's time for them to face the consequences of those choices.
